Royal Family Dishes and Bibimpab

I went to Jeonju as a member of World Student in Korea. We were given a chance to experience Royal Family Dishes and Jeonju Bibimpab.

Royal Family Dishes

Jeonju Bibimpap
Price: 10000won

신포닭강정: Shinpo chicken

Shinpo Chicken is the most famouse chicken shop in Korea. I usually go to eat it with my friends when we are free because it is not very far from our place. The menu that we usually have is the fried one and the non fried one. However, I prefer Thakkagn chogn. It is pretty spicy; though I love it so much. There are two ways of order the chicken. 1st one is that you have to order them in advance and bring it home to eat with your family so that you don't need to wait for a long time. 2nd one is that you can eat the chicken at that place directly. In my case, I prefer eating there because it is sometimes interesting to wait for it and feel hungry during the waiting time. When it is our turn to go in, it's just the right time that we reach the peak of our hunger. Therefore, I can eat it deliciously.
If you have a chance to visit Korea, please don't forget to give it a try. I am sure you won't be disappointed. ^^

This one is the best for me.
The big one: 14000won
The small one : 9000won

The big one: 14000won
The small one: 9000won
The most delicious time to eat is from 3pm to 5pm .
Hope you enjoy it^^

Grand Festival for Taekwondo Practitioners from 150 Countries Worldwide

The 2011 World Taekwondo Championships will be held May 1-6 in Gyeongju, a time-honored capital city of ancient Korea. The competition, a biennial international sports event, is the largest single taekwondo event in Korea. Matches are divided into men’s and women’s events with 8 rounds per each weight class.

This year, a record-breaking 10,000 visitors (athletes, officials, journalists and tourists) from over 150 of the 192 WTF (World Taekwando Federation) countries are expected to be in attendance. 2011 marks the second time that the competition has been held in Korea (the birthplace of Taekwondo) following the 2001 championships held in Jeju. Gyeongju, this year’s event venue, is one of Korea’s major tourist destinations and has a wide range of cultural heritages to offer those visiting the city for the World Taekwondo Championships.

Kings and Queens to be Honored at Jongmyo Daeje

Jongmyo Daeje, a royal ancestral rite performed annually in honor of the kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), will take place on May 1st at Jongmyo Shrine in Jongno, Seoul. The ceremony will begin with rites at Yeongnyeongjeon (Hall of Eternal Peace), where the spirit tablets of former kings and queens are enshrined. It is then followed by a royal procession called Eogahaengyeol (“eoga” refers to a royal carriage and “haengnyeol” means a parade), which is a reenactment of the kings’ travel to Jongmyo Shrine with his princes and subjects. Finally, the ceremony will end with rites at Jeongjeon Hall. Each of the Jongmyo Daeje rituals is accompanied by Jongmyo Jeryeak, an elaborate performance of court music and dance honoring the posthumous kings, to augment the ceremony’s reverent atmosphere.

Jongmyo Daeje is a perfect opportunity to experience the intangible and tangible elements of Korean cultural heritage in one place, as the ceremony itself and its venue have been recognized by UNESCO as of great historical significance. Jongmyo Daejae and Jongmyo Jeryeak were inscribed as the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2001, and Jongmyo Shrine has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1995.

Free call taxis serve disabled people

The Seoul Metropolitan Facilities Management Corp. operated the call taxi service for the disabled, free of charge, on the occasion of the 31st Day of the Disabled” on April 20.

The free call taxi service was available from 00:00 to 24:00 on April 20 for people with disability grades 1 and 2, people with brain lesions and wheelchair users in grades 1 and 2. Wheelchair users from other cities and provinces, including foreigners, were also eligible to use the free service.

To use the service, customers can dial the call center at 1588-4388 or apply at the website (calltaxi.sisul.or.kr) as in ordinary times. However, the number of call taxis has increased by 200 over the past five years (i.e., by 20 in 2006, 50 in 2007, 50 in 2008, 60 in 2009, and 20 in 2010) to reach 300 at present.

Call taxis for the disabled in Seoul City, which have been in service for nine years, had 1,925 users on average per day last year, while the cumulative number of users reached 3.4 million by late March this year. The number of users is set to top 4 million early next year, as 720,000 people are expected to use the taxis this year.

2022 World Cup Korea will Contribute to World Peace!

Bidding Committee for the 2022 World Cup Korea

The Bidding Committee for the 2022 World Cup Korea was established on August 19, 2009. Han Seung-ju, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade was designated as its chairperson, and appointed fifty-eight committee members from diverse fields including athletics, local government, politics, economy, culture and the media, eight of whom were appointed as executive committee members. Seven celebrities (Cha Bum-kun, Park Ji-sung, Jung Joon-ho, Jung Kyung-ho, Cho Yun-hee, Kim Young-chul, and Kim Heung-guk) were requested to serve as honorary promotion ambassadors, and about thirty workers engaged in promotional activities at the head office in Seoul.

The committee launched the official website on January 12, 2010, asking the public to take part in an open competition for slogans, cheering messages, and UCC stories, etc. A general meeting was held on March 4th to select fourteen stadiums in twelve cities for the 2022 World Cup. March 31st marked the first day of the World Cup Organization Committee on FIFA records, and an official Bid Book was submitted to FIFA on May 14th. For four days from July 22nd to 25th, FIFA’s on-the-spot survey team visited Korea to check preparation status, so that review report per country could be submitted to the FIFA execution committee in November 2010.

The committee has put spurs to their final eight weeks convincing all FIFA-related people involved in international matches and events, while finalizing preparations for the presentation to the execution committee, held on December 2nd in Zurich, which is the official the last stage of the bidding campaign.

Why Korea for the 2022 World Cup?

There are several reasons why the 2022 World Cup ought to be held in Korea, but the most important one is that there will be three ‘heritages’ after the games. The first one is the ‘heritage of inspiration’. Korea has made the switch from being a beneficiary of to a provider of help in only one generation, so holding the World Cup in such a country will inspire other developing countries to believe that “We can do it too!”

The second is the ‘heritage of peace’. Korea is now the only separated country in the world, so holding the World Cup in the country could help further the cause of peace on the Korean peninsula, as well as contributing to world peace. That is to remind the massive success of the 1988 Olympics, and the milestone of leaving the Cold War behind, which was a critical stage in the opening up of Eastern Europe and the unification of Germany. As so, the 2022 World Cup held on the Korea peninsula can be expected to lead the two Koreas to undergo positive changes and contribute to world peace and prosperity.

Third is the ‘heritage of passion’. The fan fest and street cheering that started spontaneously at Seoul Plaza during the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan spread to the whole world at the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Globalization of the World Cup has brought a worldwide passion for soccer, and Korean government and citizens passionate and serious about the sport are ready to impress the worldwide soccer fans.

Now the World Cup is important to Korea because it will bring benefits to everyone in Korea, including local communities. According to the estimates of a U.K. economy group called PWC, the 2018 World Cup will bring more than 3.7 billion EUR in advantages to the U.K. economy. We are also expecting that the 2022 games will induce about KRW 7.4 trillion of manufacturing and KRW 3.2 trillion of added values to our economy.More valuable than just the numbers are the expectations outside the economy, the most important of which concern the dramatic improvement of the national brand.
FIFA writes a report on each bidding country based on the Bid Book and the on-site review and Korea by no means falls behind other candidate countries. Korea, has the passion for soccer, warmth and kindness, a friendly climate, excellent infrastructures, and experience of hosting international events, while nurturing the value of ‘inspiration’ and ‘peace’ coinciding with the spirit of the global festival.

Complete infrastructure ready to host the World Cup event

The success of the 2002 FIFA World Cup Korea/Japan and the steady supply of social infrastructure from government, and our experience of hosting major international events mean that Korea has the capability and facilities required of a World Cup site. FIFA pays close attention to the capabilities of the bidder countries, as well as the physical heritages acquired from hosting other events. For example, Korea has ten suitable stadiums after co-hosting the 2002 World Cup, and the 2010 games in South Africa which brought a grand success beyond expectations, gave the country a better look than it used to thanks to the new facilities including the stadiums.

FIFA requires the host country to have 12~18 stadiums, 88~100 training sites, 60,000 accommodation facilities, inter-city transportation, a broadcasting system for the fast and accurate delivery of game information, medical facilities, and many other social infrastructures. In addition to the ten stadiums from the 2002 WC, there are 12 other cities with 14 stadiums including the Cheonan and Goyang Stadiums built for the U-17 World Cup in 2007, Seoul Olympic Stadium, and the main stadium built for the Asian Games Incheon 2014. Also, many new ultramodern hotels will have been built by 2022, although the current number of hotel rooms already exceeds 100,000. Our infrastructure includes 15 airports and KTX railroads, expressways, world-top broadband networks, and medical institutes capable of catering to global medical tourism.

As for the physical aspect of hosting the games, efforts are continued to reinforce the existing facilities, and work on finalizing planned ones. Plans for the main stadium for the Asian Games Incheon 2014, the underwater tunnel between Mokpo and Jeju, and new express railroads and expressways should be widely promoted, while investments are being made in the maintenance of existing stadiums and the utilization of eco-friendly systems.

Korean novel touches the hearts of American readers

Best-selling novel “Please Look After Mom” by Shin Kyung-sook, one of Korea’s most widely read writers, made its debut in the United States on April 5. With its first print run of 100,000 copies already sold out, Shin’s publication now ranks on some of the world’s most prominent bestseller lists, opening a new chapter for literary Hallyu.

The English translation of Shin Kyung-sook’s sixth novel, “Please Look After Mom (translation by Kim Chi-Young)” was first published in Korean in 2008, and became a major hit in its home country. A heartrending story of an ordinary family searching their missing mother, Shin weaves together different perspectives to create a unique and moving story.

Shin’s U.S. publisher, Knopf, decided on an almost unprecedented first run of 100,000 copies, which is rare for a translated work. A second edition had to be quickly ordered ahead of the official release. “Please Look After Mom” has garnered rave reviews from critics at a number of influential media outlets, including Library Journal and Publishers Weekly.

The book was selected for “Amazon Best Books of the Month” in April and chosen by Oprah’s Book Club. Barnes & Noble, the largest book retailer in the United States, selected it for their summer “Discover New Great Writers” program.

In conjunction with its official release, the New York Times covered “Please Look After Mom” twice; once in a March 30 book review and again on April 1. Reviewer Mythili Rao praised the novel as a raw tribute to the mysteries of motherhood, while Janet Maslin gave the book favorable notice, writing has Shin had “turned the book’s title, which initially sounded like an order, into something much more powerful: a prayer.”
On April 5, the Korean Cultural Service in New York hosted a reception for Shin to celebrate the release of the English translation at the Korean Consulate General in New York.

Nearly 200 people attended the event, including Knopf’s Vice President, Robin Desser; New York Times book reviewer, Mythili G. Rao; President of the Korea Society, Mark Minton; and New York Consulate General of Korea, Kim Young-mok.

Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon also sent a congratulatory message to Shin, saying he hoped that the book will give solace to all the mothers of the world and inspire many fathers, daughters and sons to rethink their family relationships.

The director of Korea Cultural Service New York, Lee Woo-sung, said that it has not been easy for Korean novels to find publishers overseas due to insignificant presence and low demand for translated publications. Lee said he hoped to help support and introduce Korean literature overseas, following the success of the English translation of “Please Look After Mom.”
The author said at the reception that she was surprised to hear virtually the same comments from readers in the States as from the Korean audience and publishers a few years ago, expressing amazement of people’s “universal feelings and existential values.” She said she hoped that her success will lead to more Korean books on the international literary scene. She mentioned the help given by the Korea Literature Translation Institute and other related organizations, saying that their work has begun to pay off.

Meanwhile, translation rights for to the book have been sold in 24 countries throughout North America, Europe and Asia, including the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Norway, Israel and Japan.

Incheon: Best Airport in the World 6 Years Running

Incheon International Airport (IIAC) has been named the ‘Best Airport Worldwide’ by the Airports Council International (ACI) at the annual Airport Service Quality (ASQ) awards for 2010 held in New Delhi, India. The recipient is selected based on the survey of 34 fields – 7 in services and 27 in facilities and operation – conducted by ACI through 1-on-1 interviews with 250,000 airport users worldwide. This is the sixth straight year since 2005 that Incheon International Airport has won the award, also known as the Nobel Prize in the field of airport services. Dubai International Airport of UAE is the only other airport that has won this award more than once; it won three times in a row. Incheon International Airport also topped the list in two other categories: ‘Best Airport in Asia-Pacific’ and ‘Best Airport with 25-40 Million Annual Passenger Capacity.’

Meanwhile, Gimpo International Airport earned a top spot in the ‘Best Airport with 15-25 Million Annual Passenger Capacity’ category. Gimpo International Airport, which joined the annual ACI evaluation only last year, ranked 6th in the ‘Best Airport Worldwide’ category after Incheon, Singapore Changi International Airport, Hong Kong International Airport, Beijing Capital International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport. ACI, an airport service advisory group with over 1,700 member airports, requires participation in the ASQ Survey for four quarters of a year to be eligible for the annual ASQ awards.

Cannes-winning film “Poetry” receives more awards

Poetry, which won Best Screenplay at the 2010 Cannes Film Festival, has received the spotlight for the second consecutive year at international film festivals, winning four more awards in March alone. More recently on April 5, the heroine of the movie, Yun Jung-hee was awarded a French cultural order in recognition of her lifelong contribution to the film.

Korean films continue to shine abroad

The lasting tide of the Korean Wave, culminated by Poetry, continues to reach the broad global culture scene across Asia and Europe.

Novelist-turned-film-director Lee Chang-dong’s fifth work, Poetry, was named best picture, winning the top prize Le Regard d’or (Golden Gaze) on the last day of the 25th Fribourg International Film Festival that took place from March 19 to 26. In 2008, the festival had already honored the legendary Korean director with a tribute.

Poetry, which competed with 11 feature films that reflect a diversity of genres and subject matters, also won the prestigious FIRPRESCI Award (Prix de la FIPRESCI) from the International Federation of Film Critics. As a result, Poetry received a total of 17 domestic and international film awards, which is rare for a single movie.

At the Fribourg Festival, another Korean director Kim Tae-yong’s Late Autumn, starring Korean actor Hyun Bin and Chinese actress Tang Wei, picked up the Ex-Change award, a prize accredited by a special youth jury. The movie also won the Special Mention of the Jury of the International Federation of Film Societies.

Meanwhile, Poetry shone at the 5th Asian Film Awards ceremony held on March 21, in conjunction with Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF). It added two more awards to its “awardography” with the Best Director and Best Screenplay Awards.

Also worth noting, Korean actor Ha Jung-woo won the Best Actor for his starring role in The Yellow Sea while Yoon Yeo-jeong claimed the trophy of Best Supporting Actress in The Housemaid at the Asian Film Awards.

Heroine of "Poetry" Yun Jung-hee received the prestigious French cultural order “Officier”

On April 5, the French Government bestowed the honor of "Officier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officer of the Order of Arts and Letters)" on Yun Jung-hee in recognition of her significant contributions in the field of film. The award confirms the ardent response from audiences to her impassioned performance in Poetry, which was released in France last August.

Originally, the French Ministry of Culture and Communication was set to grant her Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters). The French Culture Ministry said that the French Culture and Communications Minister Frédéric Mitterrand acknowledged her lifelong career in the realm of cinema expressing his great respect through the decision to award her the higher order of Officier.

It is significant that Yun and her husband, the renowned pianist Paik Kun-woo, have become the first Korean couple to be so honored by the French Government. Paik was named Chevalier dans l'ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2001.

At the ceremony, Yun expressed gratitude saying that she was delighted with the recognition of French audiences. She added that she would continue to devote her energies to film.

Yun Jung-hee is widely known to Korean audiences, having taken leading roles from the very beginning of her acting career in 1966. The veteran Korean actress has since starred in over 300 films and is considered a member of the undisputed troika of Korean cinema of the ’60s.

Yun received dozens of awards for Best Actress both at home and overseas and has served on the jury at a number of international film festivals, including the Deauville Asian Film Festival and the World Film Festival in Montreal. Returning to the screen with Poetry after a 16 year-hiatus, she won the Best Actress at last year’s Grand Bell Awards, one of the most prestigious film awards in Korea.

Jeonju International Film Festival kicks off April 28th

The 12th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) will be held for 9 days from April 28th to May 6th, running under the theme of ‘Freedom, Independence, and Communication.’

During the festival, a total of 190 films hailing from 38 different countries (including Korea, Portual, Mexcio, and Iran) will be screened. The 131 feature films (with a running time of 60min or more) and 59 short films will be divided into six different categories: ‘Competition,’ ‘JIFF Project,’ ‘Cinemascape,’ ‘Stranger than Cinema,’ ‘Cinemafest,’ and ‘Focus On.’

The film festival will open with ‘Nader and Simin: A Separation’ (by Iranian director Asghar Farhadi), a film that won the Golden Bear Award at the Berlin International Film Festival. The plotline follows the characters from different families as their lives intertwine and they are each met with different ethical and psychological dilemmas. The festival will close with the movie named the winner of the Korean Feature Films Competition.

This year’s festival highlights a greater number of documentary films than in the previous years. A total of 24 (12 international, 12 domestic) documentaries will be screened in the ‘International Competition’ section and a selection of films and documentaries will make their appearance in the ‘Cinemascape’ category, providing commentary on worldwide cinema trends.

In the ‘Stranger than Cinema’ category, an array of interesting experimental films will be introduced including ‘K.364: A Journey by Train,’ (a film from the U.K. narrating Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante K.364) and ‘The Nine Muses’ (a U.K. film exploring the history of mass migration to post-war Britain using Greek mythology as a narrative reference). Other special programs will be running as well, including the ‘Jeonju Project Market’ (featuring unique and promising film projects) and the ‘Phone Film Festival,’ (exploring the diverse methods of film-making using mobile phone devices).

Visa and MasterCard cardholders, as well as residents of Korea, may make reservations online at the official JIFF website. Tickets may also be purchased onsite from the box offices before and during the festival. The official festival screening schedule will be announced on the JIFF webpage on April 5th.

Work of Paik Nam-June Displayed on the Wall of Seoul Square

The work of Late Paik Nam-June (1932-2006), who is considered to be the first to incorporate video in the art genres, will be featured on Media Canvas on the façade of the Seoul Square building. The show includes ‘Fashion from Suite 212,’ one of 30 ‘Suite 212’ pieces that aired in 1975 on America’s Channel 13 after the scheduled programs were over. The three-minute video clip is based on the colorization method, connecting diverse photos of the New York streets, Chinatown merchants, fashion models, cosmetic advertisement and other scenes from the Big Apple.

In addition, works of four German media artists will also go on display on Media Canvas. They include Corinna Schnitt’s work featuring repetitive handwriting of words or sentences, as well as Heike Baranowsky’s depiction of the Moon traveling all over the canvas like a searchlight.
