Public Service Office Opens on Subway Train

Gyeonggi Province has opened a public service office aboard a subway train with government officials offering consultation on employment, welfare, health, finances and other civic issues.

Currently in a trial stage, the office is in a renovated carriage on a train that travels between Seodongtan and Seongbuk on Subway Line 1. It runs from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., making four round trips per day. The one-way travel time averages one hour and 45 minutes.

A person receives health counseling.

The office also provides amenities such as a nursery, cell phone chargers, bookstore, Wi-Fi zone and farm products stall. Passengers can also use laptops to print out documents such as resident registration cards.

Depending on the success of the trial project, the province may also operate the train between Incheon and Soyosan as well as between Cheonan and Cheongnyangni on Line 1. It is also looking into patenting the public service train concept, as it is the first of its kind in the world.
