Korea's new top executives majored in business administration or mechanical engineering, entered big companies between 1987 and 1988, and waited 23 years and three months to be promoted to the executive positions. They mostly worked in sales or marketing when they joined the firm and are on average 49.4 years old.
They went to university in the early 1980s, where they experienced the two major events that shaped the era -- the June 1987 democratic uprising and the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
The Chosun Ilbo analyzed the profiles of 1,411 executives who were promoted last year in Korea's top 15 companies, including 652 who reached their first executive position. The time it took new executives to rise through the ranks varied among companies. Those at LG saw the quickest promotion, taking on average 21 years. At Samsung it took 21 years and 7 months, and those working for Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering had to wait the longest with 29 years. The average age of new executives was the lowest at Samsung with 46.7 years, followed by 47 at SK and CJ and 47.3 at LG.
Among all executives, Seoul National University graduates formed the largest group with 119, followed by Korea University with 85, and Yonsei University with 76. Pusan National University and Hanyang University were next with 70 and 47. Of the 1,130 executives who revealed their major, 635 or 56 percent majored in humanities and social sciences, 490 in natural sciences and engineering and 221 in business.
Mechanical and electrical engineering were the most common subjects among executives with a science background with 181 and 113. Among new executives in the 12 companies that revealed their educational qualifications, 85 or 10.9 percent gained their latest degrees abroad. LG had the highest proportion of executives with overseas credentials at 36 out of 117 or 30.8 percent.
Executives mostly built their career in sales with 23 percent of the 1,101 who specified their responsibilities. That was followed by research and development, production control, and strategic planning.

Public Service Office Opens on Subway Train
Gyeonggi Province has opened a public service office aboard a subway train with government officials offering consultation on employment, welfare, health, finances and other civic issues.
Currently in a trial stage, the office is in a renovated carriage on a train that travels between Seodongtan and Seongbuk on Subway Line 1. It runs from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., making four round trips per day. The one-way travel time averages one hour and 45 minutes.

A person receives health counseling.
The office also provides amenities such as a nursery, cell phone chargers, bookstore, Wi-Fi zone and farm products stall. Passengers can also use laptops to print out documents such as resident registration cards.
Depending on the success of the trial project, the province may also operate the train between Incheon and Soyosan as well as between Cheonan and Cheongnyangni on Line 1. It is also looking into patenting the public service train concept, as it is the first of its kind in the world.

UNESCO Lists Traditional Korean Arts and Crafts
Korean traditional wooden architecture or daemokjang, songs based on traditional poetry from the Chosun era or gagok, and falcon hunting have been included on the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.
The Cultural Heritage Administration on Tuesday said the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in a meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, decided to include the three on the list.
The list was established to preserve diversity and creativity of humanity that are being rapidly lost in the wake of industrialization and globalization.

With the latest addition, Korea now has 11 traditions on the list. The other eight are the Royal Ancestral Ritual at the Jongmyo Shrine and its Music (2001); The Pansori Epic Chant (2003); The Gangneung Danoje Festival (2005); Ganggangsullae Dance (2009); Namsadang Nori Performance (2009); Yeongsanjae Buddhist Ritual (2009); Jeju Chilmeoridang Yeongdeunggut Shaman Ritual (2009); and the Cheoyongmu Dance (2009).
Gagok is sung with the accompaniment of a small orchestra with lyrics from traditional poems. There are 41 surviving gagoks. Daemokjang refers to a traditional wood craftsman who oversees the whole process of building houses. Falconry which was usually practiced in the winter in Korea is listed together with other countries such as Belgium, the Czech Republic, France, Mongolia, Morocco, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Spain, Syria, and United Arab Emirates.

The era of "smart life" dawns in Korea

Since smart phones first began storming the Korean market early last year, the so-called "smart life" has dominated Korean society.
Seemingly every possible product, from phones to TVs to a whole range of electronic goods, has been labeled "smart" and had their features enhanced.
The trend is so prevalent that Korean news agencies and industry experts have picked "smart phone" as the IT keyword of the year.
Now, users can have even more power as they make decisions about which services or products are necessary for them, and consumers actively engage in information production and consumption.
Nationwide trends in IT are now mainly being led by smart phones. As of the end of 2010, the number of smart phone users in Korea is estimated at 5.7 million. Experts say the number could reach as high as 20 million by the end of 2011. If this occurs, the number of smart phone users will account for more than one third of all mobile phone users.
The use of the wireless internet has become even more popular, too, thanks to the "smart phone revolution." For monthly fees of around 50,000 won, smart phone users can download an unlimited amount of data via wireless internet and 3G networks. As customers begin to use their mobile devices as small personal computers, lifestyles are changing to take advantage of the new flow of information.
As more and more people start using smart phones, cafes, subway cars and the sidewalks are all becoming places to watch the news, check email, play games and chat with friends through the internet. This new access to round-the-clock anywhere internet has lead to the expansion of social network services (SNS) like Twitter and Facebook, which are expected to grow even more this year.
Thanks to the "mobile big bang," social networking media have become a must-have communication channel for the public sector. A growing number of government organizations in Korea are actively using SNS to communicate with citizens, provide quick and accurate information on government policies and build a new trust-based relationship between the government and the people.
The total sales of Samsung's flagship smart phone, the Galaxy S, have exceeded 10 million units globally, thanks to its high-quality display, advanced technology and access to the Android applications market. In Korea alone, more than two million people bought a Galaxy S phone, according Samsung. North America is still the largest market, though, with 4 million Samsung smart phone customers.
Samsung isn't the only game in town, though, and more than 1.6 million Koreans have purchased an Apple iPhone in the first year of its Korean release.
In November of 2010, the Korea Communications Commission and the Korea Internet and Security Agency jointly conducted a survey over more than 2,100 smart phone users in Korea. According to the survey, most users spend almost one hour on the internet with their smart phone each day, and six out of ten use their smart phones for social networking services. Reflecting the survey results, the Korea Communications Commission said it will carry out projects to vitalize wireless internet to meet the needs of the smart phone communication era.
